When Gary Bielby joined Alternative Futures Group (AFG) in 2023, he was stepping into a completely new field. At 42, with no prior experience in social care, he began work as a Support Worker in Blackburn. Since then, Gary has become a key part of the AFG team – bringing reliability, empathy, and a strong focus on person-centred care.
Gary’s role involves supporting adults with learning disabilities to live as independently as possible. This includes helping with daily tasks such as shopping, managing appointments, and ensuring medication is handled correctly. It also means offering the kind of support that encourages people to build confidence, make independent choices, and engage more fully with their communities.
One example of Gary’s impact is his work with Adam*, who lives with a learning disability, ADHD, and social anxiety. Adam was previously reluctant to engage in day-to-day tasks and often presented behaviours that challenge. Through a calm, respectful approach – offering choices instead of instructions – Gary helped shift that dynamic. Over time, Adam began taking more initiative with his personal care, participated in household activities, and reconnected with the community. The changes have been significant, and a large part of that progress is down to Gary’s consistent, patient support.
Gary has also handled more difficult situations, including supporting a person through a distressing legal issue. His ability to remain composed and professional under pressure has been valued by both colleagues and the people he supports.
“Gary has made an incredible impact since he has been at the property,” said his Team Leader, Bex. “His positive attitude and professional manner are very impressive – it’s hard to believe he was new to social care when he joined AFG.”
Last year, in recognition of his amazing work, Gary was nominated as a Finalist for two national awards – the Care Newcomer of the Year Award at the National Care Awards and The Newcomer Award at the National Learning Disability and Autism Awards. This well-earned recognition highlights not just Gary’s potential, but the positive difference he’s already making.
Gary is currently working toward his formal qualifications in health and social care and continues to grow in his role. His journey shows that, with the right mindset and support, entering social care mid-career isn’t just possible – it can be transformative.
For those lucky enough to work with Gary or be supported by him, his presence has already made a lasting difference. We’re excited to see what’s next for Gary as he continues his career journey with AFG.
