When Sheila* arrived at Meadow Park, she was at one of the most challenging points in her life. Having spent many years struggling with her mental health and experiencing repeated hospital admissions, she found it difficult to trust professionals. Her past experiences left her feeling unheard and defensive, she struggled to engage with the support offered to her and would at times express her frustrations through challenging behaviours towards her support team.
Emma, Registered Manager at Meadow Park describes: “Sheila had never had a reason to put her trust in staff before. She had never experienced what a good therapeutic relationship could look like.”
A turning point came when Sheila began working with her named nurse, Megan. Megan showed Sheila that support could be different — taking the time to listen, offering space when needed, and observing carefully to understand what worked best for Sheila.
Sheila began to share her thoughts and preferences, and Megan ensured that Sheila’s voice was not just heard but acted upon. As trust grew, so did Sheila’s confidence. Over time, she developed healthy routines that helped her stay well. She began visiting local charity shops and built positive relationships with local shop staff — a huge milestone in reconnecting with the community.
Sheila has now moved into her very own bungalow with the support of a dedicated care team. She was fully involved in every step of the process, from choosing her room decor to meeting her future support workers.
Sheila often shares that Meadow Park has been a life-changing experience. She says it has restored her faith in others, helped her rebuild trust, and most importantly, given her life back.
