Karl’s* journey with Alternative Futures Group began in late 2019 when he was admitted to Lea Court as an inpatient. After nearly three years of intensive support, he transitioned in 2022 to a step-down service designed to help people build confidence, independence and stability in the community.
At the time of his move, Karl was under Ministry of Justice (MOJ) restrictions due to past circumstances. With a structured support plan, his support team worked closely with him to manage daily responsibilities — from attending appointments and managing medication to improving financial awareness and avoiding past risks.
Over time, Karl made remarkable progress. He became open about his mental health, engaged consistently with his support team, and eventually reached a point where he was trusted to self-medicate. The MOJ acknowledged his improvements, granting him permission to spend holidays with his family for up to two weeks — a significant milestone in his recovery.
In early 2025, Karl was informed that he had the option to come off his MOJ restrictions, pending agreement from his psychiatrist and social worker. While he chose to remain under the current conditions for now, he took full control of the process, stating he would revisit the decision when ready — a clear demonstration of the confidence he has developed.
With continued encouragement from AFG staff, his family and professionals, Karl began to explore the idea of moving on to more independent living. Though initially anxious, he ultimately made the decision to take the next step.
In April 2025, Karl moved into his own flat within a supported living building, where he now lives independently while still having the reassurance of support nearby. From hospital admission to independent living, Karl has shown resilience, courage, and determination.
