Samuel’s* journey to supported independence began after a long period of personal and mental health challenges.
For 13 years, he rarely left his home due to a combination of agoraphobia, OCD, an underactive thyroid, and high blood pressure. He spent most of his time in his bedroom, sleeping in a chair and became completely dependent on his sister for managing finances, shopping, daily tasks, and collecting medication.
His parents had previously provided this support, and after their passing, his sister stepped in to help. However, in early 2024, Samuel’s mental health deteriorated, and he was admitted to hospital under the Mental Health Act. During his stay, his sister explained that she could no longer meet his growing needs.
As Samuel began his recovery, he was anxious about what life outside of hospital would look like. He had never lived independently, and after a full assessment, it was agreed that he would benefit from moving into a supported accommodation with additional outreach hours to help him re-engage with the community.
In October 2024, Samuel moved into a nearby AFG supported living service, and his transformation began.
With tailored, gentle support from the team, Samuel started building confidence in all areas of daily living. Staff worked closely with him to identify quiet, scenic places that would allow him to go outside without feeling overwhelmed. At first, they accompanied him daily. Gradually, Samuel began going out independently — now taking walks two to three times a day. Most recently, he attended a local community centre walking group — a huge step forward.
In just five weeks, Samuel has registered with a new GP, arranged for his medications to be delivered, manages his groceries, and completes daily tasks with only minimal prompts. He’s even spoken about his next goal: getting on a bus, something he hasn’t done in years.
Samuel says he now feels proud of what he’s achieved, enjoys his renewed relationship with his sister — now free from the pressures of full-time caring — and is looking forward to building friendships and continuing to grow in his independence.
