John’s Career Journey with AFG
After 18 years of dedicated service with Alternative Futures Group (AFG), John Youds has made a lasting impact as a Support Worker in our Learning Disability division. His path into social care was inspired by looking after family members, who saw his potential for the role. Having previously worked in a factory, John embraced the new opportunity to make a positive difference in people’s lives – and he’s never looked back.
Empowering People Towards Independence
Throughout his time at AFG, John has helped the people he supports to achieve countless independence goals. From unforgettable holidays to Ireland and Scotland, to helping someone get a conservatory built on their home through perseverance and support, John embodies the values of inclusion and empowerment. “I enjoy making a difference and supporting people to live independently and have a good quality of life in their community,” he says.
Taking on the London Marathon
In 2024, John decided to step outside his comfort zone and take on the world-famous London Marathon – something he’d always dreamed of doing. His motivation was to support a cause he believes deeply in, whilst also building his physical fitness in the process.
“At first, I could barely run a mile without being out of breath,” he admits. But that didn’t stop him. Week by week, he increased his mileage, training through long workdays and cold winter weather. “Sometimes I thought, ‘What am I doing?’ But I enjoyed every part of it.”

Race Day: An Unforgettable Experience
When race day arrived, nerves gave way to excitement. “The atmosphere was electric,” John recalls. “People in the crowd were handing out water, sweets, even cups of ice. Everybody was cheering each other on – and the time just flew by. I even passed celebrities like singer Alexandra Burke and comedian Joel Dommett along the way!”
John completed the marathon in 5 hours 56 minutes, maintaining a steady pace throughout. Despite the hot weather on London Marathon day, which made the race even more challenging, John says he didn’t once feel like he was struggling. The support of the crowd, fellow runners, and his motivation carried him through.

Running for Mencap: A Charity Close to John’s Heart
John chose to run for Mencap, a charity that advocates for people with learning disabilities – a mission that strongly aligns with his work at AFG. “Mencap supports people with learning disabilities into education and employment, and provides access to some amazing opportunities. That’s something I really believe in,” he says.
Through raffles, car boot sales, sponsorships, and even two prize baskets made by a colleague that raised over £500, John raised an impressive £2,500. “The response from my colleagues, friends, and the community was incredibly supportive.”
What’s Next?
Completing the marathon has left a lasting impression on John. He feels more confident, is continuing to run, and has already applied for in the general ballot to run again in next year’s London Marathon.
His advice for anyone considering running the London Marathon: “Definitely do the training – you get so much out of it. I loved every minute of it.”
Congratulations to John on an incredible achievement!
